  • There is no easy way out for Yemen (Gulf News): Recently, many newspapers were prevented from publishing, including Yemen's most widely read independent daily, Al Ayyam, whose headquarters in Aden was besieged and two of its employees killed by government forces... using force to squash local calls for separation, targeting the media, turning a blind eye to corruption and lawlessness, and underestimatin g or discounting the real roots behind the calls for separation are all the perfect recipe for disaster.
  • YJS denounces suppressive measures against media and journalists (Yemen Post): Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) denounced the attack that targeted fellow journalist and editor Taha Abdullah Fathi from the Yemeni Satellite Channel at the hand of security soldiers. The last few weeks have been tough for journalism and journalists, for several newspapers were stopped and other online media outlets were blocked over claims of undermining the country's unity and publishing news from South Yemen.

  • Press freedom first casualty of Yemen unrest (AFP / Zawya): The growing separatist unrest in southern Yemen and the ensuing government crackdown has already made a casualty of press freedom. Eight publications independent or critical of President Ali Abdullah Saleh's administration were suspended in early May when police halted their distribution and seized all copies. The information ministry accused them of violating the press law which bans the publication of anything that could threaten the unity of Yemen, the poorest Arab country.

  • Scepticism greets new licences (Doha Centre): The announcement by the authorities that licences for new publications are to be issued has been greeted with scepticism by local journalists in the light of the continuing suspension of several independent newspapers and doubts about the commitment of the government to press freedom. Al-Ayyam newspaper has been censured since the beginning of May, together with Al-Shari?, Al-Nada, Al-Mustaqila, Al-Diyar, Al-Ahali, Al-Masdar and Al-Watani.

  • Former GPC leader urges President Saleh to step down (Yemen Times): Newsyemen.net as reported that Information Minister Hassan Al-Lawzi, who is also the government?s spokesman, has denied any decision taken by the Ministry of Information to suspend newspapers and said it only issues an administrative measure against some media who have violated press law. In his press conference on Tuesday, Al-Lawzi told reporters that some newspapers willingly disappeared for some individual conditions and troubles with printers.

  • Civil society organizations call for protest, demonstrations starts over in Al-Habilain (Yemen Post): In light of the late events in Al-Hashemi, Aden, a number of civil society organizations as well as parliamentary activists and journalists called on people to gather for a sit-in protest in front of the government in solidarity with the victims who were attacked because of their peaceful struggle. The organizations described what happened in Al-Hashemi in Aden last Thursday as a brutal attack against peaceful protesters that resulted in killing a number of people and injuring dozens.
